AERQ Shuts Down: Lufthansa Technik and LG End In-Flight Entertainment Venture

Hamburg-based start-up AERQ, a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and LG Electronics, has announced it will discontinue its business operations. The decision comes after five years of developing its digital cabin platform, AERENA, a state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment (IFE) system for commercial airlines.

A Promising Start in IFE Innovation

Since its founding in 2019, AERQ has focused on creating innovative digital cabin solutions. AERENA, its flagship product, was designed to enhance the passenger experience with advanced features, and it recently completed an operational demonstration on an Airbus A320. The system was praised for its performance, meeting expectations in terms of quality and customer satisfaction.

However, despite the positive reception, AERQ faced significant hurdles in gaining traction within the competitive IFE market. The challenges of entering this niche sector ultimately led the company’s shareholders to a mutual decision to cease operations.

Immediate Closure and Impact

As part of the closure, AERQ will wind down all activities, including the development and support of AERENA. Approximately 180 employees based at the company’s Hamburg headquarters have been informed, and preparations for an orderly shutdown are underway.

In a statement, AERQ expressed gratitude to its employees, suppliers, customers, and partners for their contributions and trust over the past five years.

Industry Implications

The decision to close AERQ underscores the challenges faced by newcomers in the IFE sector, where market dynamics, stringent regulatory requirements, and established competitors create significant barriers to entry. While AERENA showcased technological innovation, breaking through in this niche industry proved to be an uphill battle.

AERQ’s shutdown also reflects broader trends in the aviation industry, where digital transformation initiatives often contend with high costs and fluctuating demand. The wind-down marks the end of a promising venture but leaves open questions about future innovations in digital cabin experiences.

For stakeholders in the IFE market, AERQ’s journey serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in navigating this highly specialized field.

VIOOH Reports 2023 Carbon Emissions Well Below Advertising Industry Benchmarks

0

VIOOH, a prominent global digital out-of-home (DOOH) supply-side platform, recently announced its carbon emissions for 2023, revealing emissions significantly below industry averages for programmatic advertising. Working in partnership with Cedara, a carbon intelligence platform, VIOOH reported an emissions intensity under 0.35 grams of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) per ad impression—an efficiency over ten times greater than current programmatic benchmarks.

The emission figures, calculated under the Ad Net Zero Global Media Sustainability Framework (GMSF), align with a growing industry focus on sustainable advertising. By comparison, average emissions for programmatic display ads are reported at 3.6g CO2e per impression, with programmatic video ads averaging 4.8g CO2e per impression. VIOOH’s reduced emissions highlight the efficiency of programmatic DOOH, which, due to its broadcast nature and simpler supply chain, operates with a lower carbon footprint compared to other digital formats.

VIOOH’s State of the Nation 2024 report indicates rising awareness among marketers regarding the environmental benefits of programmatic DOOH, with 62% recognizing its eco-efficiency. However, only 31% currently prioritize sustainability when selecting media channels, pointing to an opportunity for expanded sustainable practices in digital advertising.

Jean-Christophe Conti, CEO of VIOOH, stated, “Tracking emissions from our programmatic DOOH activities is essential. These latest metrics show programmatic DOOH as a viable option for brands looking to balance reach and sustainability in their campaigns.”

David Shaw, CEO of Cedara, commended VIOOH’s sustainability measures. “VIOOH’s approach to transparent emissions tracking reflects an active commitment to sustainable advertising, setting an example for brands that want to make environmentally conscious choices.”

Cedara’s calculations included data from various operations—media delivery, data centers, media ownership, and detailed log-level bidstream information—to ensure accuracy. The data was aligned with the updated GMSF, which incorporates the SRI & Alliance Digitale framework’s industry default values.

Primedia Outdoor Achieves Seedooh Certification for DOOH in South Africa

0

Primedia Outdoor, a prominent player in South Africa’s digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising sector, has announced that its DOOH inventory has been independently verified by Seedooh, a leading media verification provider. This certification, in place for over a year, highlights Primedia’s commitment to transparent, accountable campaign execution for advertisers.

Importance of Third-Party Verification in DOOH Advertising

As DOOH advertising continues to expand across South Africa and the broader African market, advertisers are placing a premium on transparency and accuracy in campaign performance. Without third-party verification, advertisers rely solely on internal reports, which can sometimes lack objectivity. Seedooh’s platform addresses this need by independently verifying each aspect of campaign delivery, helping advertisers to trust that their campaigns are running as planned.

Genevieve Coward, Marketing and Revenue Growth Executive at Primedia Outdoor, said, “Our partnership with Seedooh reflects our commitment to delivering reliable, transparent solutions to our clients. Verified data offers our clients greater confidence, ensuring that each investment meets its goals effectively.”

Real-Time Reporting and Automated Compliance

One of Seedooh’s standout features is its real-time reporting capability, which provides advertisers with immediate, verified insights into campaign performance. This capability allows for quick detection and resolution of any discrepancies, which can help advertisers optimize campaign effectiveness in real time. Through integration with Primedia’s technology stack, Seedooh automates verification, making compliance with industry standards more efficient throughout the campaign lifecycle.

Jacques Olivier, Out-of-Home (OOH) lead at Carat, observed that third-party verification offers reassurance for brands seeking transparency, especially given the global rise in digital fraud. “Seedooh is an ideal choice for ensuring transparency in DOOH advertising. As clients prioritize accountability, third-party verification has become essential for the industry,” Olivier noted.

Expanding Verification Across DOOH Media

With Seedooh’s verification already applied to Primedia Outdoor’s DOOH inventory, Primedia plans to expand this system to other areas within its out-of-home advertising portfolio. By implementing consistent third-party verification across different media formats, the company aims to offer its clients a unified standard of transparency and accountability.

Erik Warburg, Director at Outdoor Auditors, acknowledged Primedia’s pioneering role in adopting third-party verification in South Africa’s DOOH sector. “Primedia has taken a valuable step in ensuring accountability within the industry. By swiftly addressing any issues flagged by Seedooh, Primedia demonstrates its commitment to delivering the right results for its clients,” Warburg said.

Setting a Benchmark for DOOH Transparency in South Africa

Primedia Outdoor’s partnership with Seedooh represents a notable development in South Africa’s DOOH advertising landscape. As the first company in the country to adopt this level of independent verification, Primedia introduces a new standard for transparency in digital advertising. By focusing on data-driven, verifiable campaigns, the company aligns with industry trends aimed at building advertiser confidence and enhancing the credibility of DOOH as an advertising medium.

The new system aims to enhance visitor experience by providing efficient content distribution across the venue’s extensive network of screens.

The extensive screen network at CO’Met Arena distributes targeted content tailored to various event spaces, including sports broadcasts in the main hall, event information in breakout rooms, and interactive guides in common areas. According to Manganelli Group’s Fabrice Leguay, the system enables efficient content management and supports a “dynamic and customized visual experience” throughout the venue.

In line with energy efficiency goals, VITEC’s IPTV solution at CO’Met Arena aligns with the company’s Zero Carbon MPEG initiative, which focuses on minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. The solution’s energy-efficient management also contributes to operational savings by reducing the time and resources needed to manage content, while supporting the arena’s goal of creating a sustainable, high-performance event environment.

Ad Net Zero Launches Global Framework for Measuring Carbon Emissions in Media

0

Ad Net Zero (ANZ) has introduced the Global Media Sustainability Framework (GMSF) 2024, a comprehensive system designed to enhance carbon tracking in the advertising industry. Leading global advertisers, advertising holding companies, media owners, tech companies, and trade associations have all backed the framework’s development, recognizing its potential to establish a consistent approach to emissions measurement across media channels.

The framework introduces tools and formulae that enable advertisers and agencies to collect emissions data across their media supply chains, aligning with Action 3 of the ANZ Action Plan. By simplifying emissions reporting and providing benchmarks, the framework supports industry-wide emissions reduction efforts. Until now, a universal method for calculating these emissions did not exist, leading to inconsistencies in carbon footprint assessments across campaigns.

Key Components of the Global Media Sustainability Framework

The GMSF includes four primary recommendations that streamline emissions measurement and reporting processes, fostering transparency and efficiency:

  1. Metrics and Methodology: A standardized, voluntary approach for measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across six media channels—digital, TV, radio, print, out-of-home, and cinema—ensuring accuracy and rigor in carbon accounting.
  2. Data Collection: A simplified data request system that gathers emissions data from media partners and value chain collaborators, reducing redundancy and improving efficiency in data exchange.
  3. Transparency: A disclosure framework that encourages media sustainability providers to outline their methods, data sources, and oversight, fostering greater clarity and consistency across industry stakeholders.
  4. Monitoring: Voluntary tools to track the adoption and progress of sustainability practices within the industry, providing insights into the effectiveness of emissions reduction efforts.

Ad Net Zero plans to further enhance the framework by adding features that facilitate data sharing and validate emissions data. Progress and adoption metrics will be reported in the second quarter of 2025.

Industry-Wide Engagement and Implementation

To encourage the framework’s widespread adoption, ANZ emphasizes specific roles for each industry sector:

  • Advertisers: Encouraged to ensure their partners adopt the framework’s standards in emissions measurement.
  • Agencies: Advised to incorporate the framework in media planning, factoring emissions assessments into campaign decisions.
  • Media Owners: Requested to provide granular emissions data to agencies and advertisers, supporting improved data accuracy over time.

The framework’s development included contributions from six cross-industry working groups, guided by climate science experts from PwC, Climate Impact Partners, and sustainability leaders from Unilever, Reckitt, and Diageo. Additional support came from the Oneframe Initiative, SRI, Alliance Digitale, and France’s SNPTV, underscoring the collaborative nature of the framework’s creation.

Channel-Specific Guidelines to Support Comprehensive Reporting

The GMSF offers tailored recommendations for each major media channel, providing detailed workflows, data requirements, and emissions formulas specific to each format. By addressing the unique characteristics of different media types, the framework enables precise measurement and reporting. The initial rollout includes guidelines for digital, TV, print, radio, out-of-home, and cinema channels, with updates planned to enhance data detail and auditability.

Collaborative Governance for Industry-Wide Impact

With input from over 100 organizations—including advertisers, agencies, media owners, and sustainability experts—the GMSF is governed by a steering team and climate science expert group. The framework incorporates best practices from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and aligns with international standards, such as ISO 14064 and ISO 14067. This collaborative approach ensures that the framework remains voluntary, science-based, and pre-competitive, allowing companies the flexibility to apply recommendations in ways that support their specific sustainability goals.

Implementation Stages: Benchmarking and Optimization

The framework’s implementation unfolds in stages:

  • Wave 1 focuses on data collection and reporting practices.
  • Waves 2 and 3 will build upon this foundation by introducing features for enhanced data precision and audit processes.

The initial stage encourages companies to Benchmark and Understand by establishing baseline emissions data. From there, organizations can pursue Reduction and Optimization, identifying and addressing emissions associated with high-impact media activities. In the final stage, Specification and Optimization, media stakeholders refine their data sources and methodologies to align with industry standards.

Future of Sustainable Advertising

The Global Media Sustainability Framework marks a milestone in the advertising industry’s journey toward sustainable practices. By focusing on emissions measurement, the GMSF also promotes transparency, data consistency, and collaboration across the media landscape. This framework empowers media organizations to align their operations with global climate goals while providing flexibility in adoption.

Ocean Outdoor Launches New Digital Screen in London’s Carnaby District

0

Ocean Outdoor has introduced The Screen on Carnaby, a new premium advertising display located in one of London’s most iconic retail and entertainment areas. Measuring 6m x 3m, this landscape-format screen is prominently positioned above The London Palladium Wall of Fame, directly opposite Carnaby Street’s north entrance and near luxury retailer Liberty.

This new digital screen joins Ocean Outdoor’s other flagship advertising locations at Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus, forming a high-visibility “golden triangle” for advertisers targeting the heart of London’s Soho district.

Adidas is the first brand to utilize this new screen, launching its FW24 Originals campaign, planned in collaboration with EssenceMediacom, which will run through October 31, 2024.

Ocean Outdoor’s new screen offers brands a prime location in one of London’s busiest shopping and cultural hubs. Nick Shaw, Chief Revenue Officer at Ocean Outdoor, emphasized the value of this new platform, particularly as the holiday shopping season approaches: “The timing couldn’t be better to be launching a new screen in the heart of London’s premium retail. The fight for the consumer pound will be fierce this Christmas, so a platform for brands capturing audiences in Soho, Regent Street, and Oxford Circus is going to be a great addition for advertiser choice.”

The Carnaby area, which has a rich history as a center for fashion and cultural movements since the 1950s, remains a major destination for both locals and tourists. With over 100 retail stores, 70 restaurants, and a variety of cultural events across its 14 streets, the district attracts an average of 44 million visitors annually. The combination of heavy foot traffic and its appeal as a cultural hotspot makes the Carnaby location a prime choice for brands looking to make an impact.

The Screen on Carnaby is powered by Daktronics, a world leader in designing, engineering, and manufacturing digital LED display technology and audio systems.
