Daktronics Introduces Advanced Flip-Chip COB LED Technology for Enhanced Performance

Daktronics, has launched its new Flip-Chip COB (Chip On Board) LED display technology globally. This latest addition to Daktronics’ Narrow Pixel Pitch (NPP) product line offers tighter pixel spacings, ranging from 1.8 millimeters to 0.9 millimeters, enhanced durability and reliability, and reduced power consumption, delivering an improved customer experience.

Innovative Features of Flip-Chip COB LED Display

The Flip-Chip COB technology provides an alternative to traditional Surface Mount Device (SMD) and Integrated Matrix Device (IMD) LED options. It generates less heat on the display surface and eliminates wire bonds to enhance reliability while lowering power consumption for cost-effective operation.

The new COB product features the thinnest and lightest cabinets available on the market. The integration of Daktronics’ Speed Frame installation process ensures quick setup with clean and sleek borders.

Daktronics has utilized over 35 years of experience in coatings and encapsulants to develop a specific encapsulant that provides a rich black matte finish. This ensures high-contrast, vibrant colors, and sharp imagery while protecting the product from impact, moisture, dust, static, and oxidation.

“Product reliability is extremely important to us at Daktronics, ensuring our projects are successful from day one and for many years to come,” said Jim Vasgaard, Daktronics national sales manager for the AV sales channel. “Our dedicated lab focuses on product and component testing to ensure we select the best parts that pass our stringent requirements, providing industry-leading reliability in our flip-chip COB LEDs, constant current drivers, power supplies, and encapsulants.”

Versatile Applications and Benefits

The Flip-Chip COB technology is versatile, offering various brightness options tailored for specific applications. It effectively combats indoor indirect sunlight, making it suitable for diverse settings such as office environments, high-ambient brightness lobbies, and concourses.

“The thin, lightweight design supports these applications, along with the screen’s durability. You can touch and tap on the display without worrying about damage,” added Gilliland. “We are excited to see these advantages implemented in multiple installations soon.”

Originating in 2008 from the innovative efforts of students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Concerto allows for the broadcasting of graphical, video, and textual messages through various templates that can be accessed and managed via a web browser. This system supports community engagement by enabling moderated user submissions or automated content imports from online sources. With features like multilingual content support, content scheduling, submission moderation, and detailed access controls, Concerto is adept at facilitating dynamic communication in environments as diverse as educational campuses and businesses.

This detailed analysis explores Concerto’s comprehensive features, supported platforms, the support and updates ecosystem, and evaluates both the benefits and challenges associated with its use in the digital signage market.

Features of Concerto

Concerto’s suite of features makes it applicable across different settings, including businesses and educational facilities:

  1. Content Management: The platform enables efficient management and scheduling of diverse content types such as images, videos, and text, which can be assembled into tailored playlists.
  2. Multi-Screen Support: It supports content distribution across multiple screens, facilitating varied content streams to different locations.
  3. Template System: Users benefit from a versatile template system for creating distinct layouts and backgrounds applicable across various signs and content categories.
  4. User Access Control: Concerto ensures controlled access with its comprehensive user management system, which regulates who can post or modify content.
  5. RSS Feeds and Live Data: The system integrates live data feeds, including RSS, weather, and news, ensuring that the information displayed is current and relevant.

Supported Platforms

Developed on Ruby on Rails, Concerto is compatible with all major operating systems such as Windows, macOS, and Linux that support Ruby. It operates on minimal hardware but requires a database (MySQL or SQLite) and a web server (Apache or Nginx).

Support and Updates

Concerto’s development is community-driven, with contributions made through GitHub. Although community support provides regular updates, it is noteworthy that the latest significant version, 2.3.6, was released on December 31, 2017. This indicates a period of over seven years without a major update, which might influence potential adopters’ decisions.

Implications of Limited Recent Updates

The lack of substantial updates in recent years can raise concerns regarding security, compatibility with new technologies, and the platform’s ability to incorporate modern digital signage functionalities. Users considering Concerto might need to invest additional resources in maintaining and customizing the software to meet contemporary standards.

Advantages of Concerto

  1. Cost Efficiency: As an open-source tool, Concerto is available at no cost, making it a financially viable option for various organizations.
  2. Customization: The platform’s open-source nature allows for extensive customization to meet specific user needs.
  3. Community Support: The active community around Concerto provides a resource for assistance and sharing enhancements.
  4. Scalability: From single-screen setups to extensive multi-display configurations, Concerto scales effectively to fit different deployment sizes.

Challenges of Concerto

  1. Technical Skill Requirement: Effective use of Concerto requires proficiency in Ruby on Rails and understanding of server management.
  2. Absence of Commercial Support: The platform lacks dedicated support services, which could be a critical factor for businesses requiring reliable, immediate technical assistance.
  3. Hardware Demands: Although the software is lightweight, larger installations with multiple feeds and displays may necessitate more powerful hardware.

Conclusion

Given the prolonged period without significant updates and the associated security risks, Concerto is best recommended for users who do not require developer support and are comfortable using or testing on older hardware platforms. It provides an opportunity to glean insights and ideas from an established old system, but for those seeking a more secure and actively maintained open-source digital signage solution, alternatives like Xibo or Anthias are advisable. These platforms offer more recent updates and active developer support, enhancing security and compatibility with modern technology.

Ivee and CMT Launch Innovative ‘Smart Taxi’ Experience to Transform In-Cab Ads and Engagement

0

Ivee and Creative Mobile Technologies, LLC (CMT) have launched a transformative “Smart Taxi” experience, equipping 10,000 taxis in CMT’s network with advanced infotainment software. This strategic move aims to enhance the passenger experience and offer brands a powerful platform to reach an estimated 25 million passengers annually.

The “Smart Taxi” integrates Ivee’s proprietary technologies: Ivee Inside (infotainment software), Ivee Intelligence (personalization technology), and Ivee Ads (advertising platform). This integration aims to deliver a personalized and engaging experience for passengers while providing advertisers with an effective and measurable advertising solution.

Dave Matthews, VP of Product at Ivee, highlights the significance of a user-centric approach in advertising: “Without a user-centric experience, ads are ignored and can even tarnish brand image because they feel interruptive.”

Passenger benefits of the “Smart Taxi” include complete control over their entertainment choices, such as selecting from a variety of content from over 20 networks including ABC and Bloomberg. The technology also offers unique features like karaoke and language learning opportunities tailored to the journey’s context, such as the trip’s start location and time of day.

For advertisers, Ivee Ads provides a competitive advantage with six times higher click-through rates (CTRs) compared to leading platforms like Google, YouTube, and Facebook, and twice as many completed video views. Its advanced targeting capabilities enable precise advertising tailored to factors such as geo-location, trip destination, day-part, content type, and user sentiment.

Alex Giannikoulis, CEO of Ivee, expressed the strategic vision behind their product: “Launching ‘Smart Taxi’ with CMT leverages both companies’ strengths and is geared towards maximizing passenger engagement and advertiser reach.”

Ron Sherman, Chairman of CMT, commented on the partnership, “CMT’s rich history with the world’s top advertisers combines seamlessly with Ivee’s innovative approach to ride-hail advertising, setting the stage for a new era in targeted and effective advertising within taxis.”
