Castle View Enterprise Academy Enhances Communication with ONELAN Digital Signage System

Castle View Enterprise Academy

Castle View Enterprise Academy, established in September 2009 as part of Sunderland’s ‘Building Schools for the Future’ initiative, has integrated a state-of-the-art ONELAN digital signage system. Sponsored by the City of Sunderland Council and Northumbrian Water, the £17 million investment in the Academy has allowed it to specialise in Business, Enterprise, and ICT, aligning with its goal of becoming a regional leader in ICT innovation.

Project Objectives and Scope

The Academy had several key objectives for their digital signage system, which included:

  • Delivering cost-effective communication to visitors, students, and staff.
  • Broadcasting live TV across the IP network, including school events and external content.
  • Providing a video-on-demand library for learning resources.
  • Enabling teachers to create and distribute online learning materials.

This digital signage system plays a crucial role in fulfilling the Academy’s vision of leading in ICT by providing an innovative, flexible, and easy-to-use platform. Before the Academy’s rebuild, no similar technology existed in the original school, making the ONELAN system a significant technological advancement.

Digital Signage Content Strategy

Castle View uses the ONELAN system to display a wide variety of content, such as:

  • School club promotions.
  • Results of House competitions.
  • Birthday announcements.
  • Behavioral league tables.
  • Event details.
  • Television channels during lunch and breaks.

The digital signage network includes 11 ONELAN Net-Top-Boxes (NTBs)—1 NTB 610 publisher and 10 NTB 510 subscribers. Additionally, the installation of two OmniServers enables the Academy to record and broadcast live TV feeds, such as news and educational channels, without the need for extra RF cabling, thereby minimizing costs.

Improved Communication and Time-Saving

One of the major benefits of the ONELAN system is the ability to quickly and easily disseminate important information across the Academy. Traditionally, distributing messages to large groups was time-consuming and inefficient, but the digital signage system has transformed this process.

Gavin Willis, Marketing and Content Coordinator at Castle View, highlights the time-saving and efficiency benefits: “Staff and students are constantly knocking on my door asking if new things can be uploaded… The time-saving aspects of this system are invaluable. I would strongly recommend this system to any business that wants to take itself forward in the way of signage and getting their message across.”

The system has not only enhanced communication within the Academy but also fostered greater engagement with students and staff by providing visually appealing and dynamic displays.

About ONELAN

ONELAN, based in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, is a leader in developing network appliances for digital signage solutions. Its Net-Top-Box (NTB) offers a multimedia, multi-zoned platform capable of displaying both stored and live media, including RSS feeds, web pages, and broadcast TV.

The Runnymede Hotel Enhances Guest Communication with ONELAN Digital Signage

Runnymede hotel

The Runnymede Hotel has implemented ONELAN digital signage to improve its ability to communicate effectively with approximately 200 guests who pass through the hotel daily. This system not only modernizes the hotel’s image but also helps reduce the costs and delays associated with printing brochures and flyers.

Project Objectives

The Runnymede Hotel sought a digital signage solution that would:

  • Present a contemporary, “up-to-the-minute” feel to guests.
  • Replace the need for printed brochures and flyers, reducing both cost and waste.
  • Allow for instant updates, in contrast to time-consuming brochure reprints.

The hotel selected ONELAN for its user-friendly interface and Ad Hoc capability, which allows staff to easily input messages, announcements, visual paging, and update the display layouts.

How the Digital Signage is Being Used

The Runnymede Hotel installed 25 ONELAN Net-Top-Boxes across the property. The digital signage system is deployed in key areas to enhance guest experience:

  • Reception Areas: Large 50-inch screens in the reception areas show live TV alongside advertisements for hotel services, such as last-minute beauty salon availability. These displays are updated regularly, with plans to integrate videos showcasing hotel events and offerings.
  • Event Displays: A 63-inch screen is dedicated to special events, such as weddings. During wedding receptions, this screen can display real-time photos of the event, creating an interactive experience for guests.
  • Meeting Rooms: Outside each meeting room, 10-inch screens display company information and videos tailored to each client. These screens are updated instantly for each new event, providing a personalized experience.

Additionally, the digital signage network includes an RSS ticker feed that delivers up-to-date travel information and conditions around Heathrow Airport and major roadways, ensuring guests are well informed.

Positive Feedback from the Runnymede Hotel

The hotel’s staff has praised the ONELAN digital signage system for its simplicity and effectiveness. Andrew Duggan, from the Runnymede Hotel, noted: “The ONELAN Digital Signage solution is perfect for our needs as it is very user friendly, easy to use, and easy to update very quickly.”

Digital View Announces HD-SDI Solution

0

Digital View, a leader in LCD controller technology, has expanded its product lineup with the release of the HD-3000 adapter board. Tailored for high-end video applications such as broadcast and digital signage, the HD-3000 enables professional display designers to elevate their solutions by adding robust dual-channel HD-SDI support, making it a valuable tool for delivering high-definition video content across HDMI monitors.

The HD-3000 adapter board is fully compatible with Digital View’s SVH-1920 LCD controller, a high-performance interface designed to support Full HD (1080p) LCD panels. With the integration of the HD-3000, display system designers can leverage dual-channel HD-SDI with transfer rates of up to 3G, offering an efficient solution for managing high-quality video signals. The board is compliant with industry standards, ensuring reliable performance in various professional settings.

This new offering is particularly beneficial for broadcast studios, control rooms, and digital signage networks, where maintaining signal integrity and flexibility is critical. A standout feature of the HD-3000 is its re-clocked loop-through outputs, enabling ‘daisy-chaining’ of multiple displays or equipment to a single HD-SDI source. This capability simplifies setups and minimizes cabling, allowing designers to connect multiple monitors without sacrificing image quality.

According to Digital View Chairman James Henry, the HD-3000 adapter is a cost-effective solution for transmitting HD-SDI signals over long distances, reducing the need for more complex and expensive systems. “Professional display manufacturers can offer high-end video display products at a fraction of the cost compared with other solutions,” commented Henry. This affordability does not compromise on quality, making the HD-3000 a strong contender in the professional video equipment market.

The HD-3000 not only offers dual-channel HD-SDI but also includes support for embedded audio, allowing seamless integration of video and audio signals. This feature is essential for broadcast and signage applications where synchronized audio-visual output is a priority. The board’s robust build and extensive compatibility make it an ideal add-on for designers looking to create sophisticated display solutions quickly and efficiently.

The SVH-1920 LCD controller, when combined with the HD-3000, provides support for a wide range of LCD panels, including those from leading manufacturers such as Sharp, Samsung, LG, and AU Optronics. The SVH-1920 supports up to WUXGA resolution (1920 x 1200 pixels) and features multi-sync capabilities for analog and digital inputs, such as PC, DVI, and video interfaces. It also offers advanced functionalities, including full-screen image expansion, image flip and invert functions, and onscreen Picture-in-Picture (PIP) capabilities.

With its powerful combination of the SVH-1920 and HD-3000, Digital View continues to empower professional display manufacturers to develop feature-rich video products for broadcast, military, marine, medical, and digital signage applications. The ability to support High-Definition Serial Digital Interface (HD-SDI) for up to 3G transfer rates positions these products as reliable, high-performance solutions for demanding environments.

Ogilvy & Mather today announced an innovative technology experience designed to educate consumers on how cities can become smarter. The eight by twelve-foot interactive display allows people to witness IBM’s transformative solutions in urban systems such as transportation, energy, utilities, public safety, healthcare, education, and economic development.

This cutting-edge display integrates multi-touch technology, gesture-triggered activation, audio, video, and a mobile text ‘call to action’ feature. It is the first of its kind to combine these technologies into a single experiential display. Travelers passing through American Airlines Terminal 8 at New York’s JFK airport can explore over 30 videos and other creative elements developed by IBM’s long-time agency partner, Ogilvy & Mather, in collaboration with Monster Media.

“In a complex environment like a city where different systems must act as one and be as efficient as possible, educating city officials and governments is only part of the process,” explained Pam Kaplan, Vice President of Market Management at IBM Global Industries. “We created this interactive experience in one of the most traveled locales in the world because if members of society understand how smarter cities can affect them personally, they will influence change within their own communities.”

TheSmarterCity Experience

The interactive board and its white cityscape are activated by the motion of passing travelers, with vibrant colors filling various parts of the city. In addition to animations, the unit features an audio ‘call to action,’ encouraging travelers to explore and learn from TheSmarterCity. The touch-enabled display provides in-depth content, allowing users to select areas of interest and discover real-world examples of how IBM is building a smarter planet today.

“IBM has extensive experience in helping cities and their leaders develop smarter solutions,” said Lou Aversano, CEO of Ogilvy & Mather. “Using innovative channels like this one-of-a-kind display provides an engaging environment to share these stories with business leaders and consumers, allowing them to delve deeper into IBM’s Smarter Cities initiatives.”

The unit also includes a rotating ticker displaying compelling statistics about urban life, such as “By 2050, 70% of the world will live in cities,” and “NYC’s Real Time Crime Center is helping cut crime by 27%.” Viewers can text “smarter” to a provided number to receive a link to the full, flash-based experience at www.ibm.com/thesmartercity.

Continuous Insights with Real-Time Analytics

“The out-of-home environment is one of the most innovative places for marketers to create unique brand experiences today,” said Chris Beauchamp, CEO of Monster Media. “By leveraging new technology in environments where consumers seek interactive experiences, such as airports, we deliver measurable results.”

TheSmarterCity JFK board will be on display through September 24, 2010.

Omaha, NE — Keywest Technology has announced the deployment of its advanced digital signage hardware and software to power a prominent new LED display at the entrance to the historic Old Market district in downtown Omaha. The 15-foot-by-12-foot LED sign, driven by Keywest’s MediaXtreme media player and MediaZone software, is a key feature of a newly developed courtyard that welcomes visitors to the area.

The transformation of an 81-space parking lot into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly public space is highlighted by this large Absen LED screen, which works in conjunction with an interactive sculpture, “O! Guy,” by a local artist. The courtyard now features environmentally friendly native grasses, wildflowers, trees, tables, chairs, bicycle racks, free Wi-Fi, new lighting, a water fountain, and a special events kiosk.

Collaborative Effort

Keywest Technology collaborated with the Greater Omaha Chamber, architectural and engineering firm HDR, and other local stakeholders from the project’s inception. This collaborative approach ensured that the LED sign met the community’s needs and enhanced the historic shopping and dining area’s appeal.

“The Omaha Old Market project is noteworthy because it shows the ability of Keywest Technology to work with a range of stakeholders in a high-profile project, work with architects and others from the earliest stages of planning, and offer insight and solutions to meet their objective even as the scope and budget of the project changes over time,” said Nick Nichols, president of Keywest Technology.

Adapting to Evolving Objectives

Initially intended to broadcast Nebraska Cornhusker football games, the LED display’s purpose shifted to welcoming visitors to the Old Market area. Throughout this transition, Keywest Technology provided ongoing consultation, leveraging its digital signage expertise to adapt the project’s scope effectively.

State-of-the-Art Digital Signage

At the core of the new LED display is Keywest Technology’s MediaXtreme media player and MediaZone software, which manage the playback schedules from the Greater Omaha Chamber offices. In addition to providing the necessary technology, Keywest Technology handled the installation, testing, and training to ensure the project’s success.

A Model for Urban Renewal

The Greater Omaha Chamber aims for the new courtyard and entryway to set a precedent for other city parking lots. David G.
