Showcase Cinemas Transforms Movie-Going Experience with Philips Digital Signage

0

PPDS, the global provider of Philips Professional Displays, and DEEL Media, a digital signage solutions specialist, have successfully upgraded the visual experience at Showcase Cinemas in the United States. The installation of 568 remotely managed 4K Philips digital signage and videowall units in all 22 Showcase Cinemas has aimed to revitalize the visual aesthetics of the theaters and enhance communication, ultimately boosting revenues.

Background: A Cinematic Legacy

Showcase Cinemas, founded in 1936 in Dedham, Massachusetts, is a well-established player in the motion picture exhibition industry. With 76 venues operating almost 1,000 screens across the US, UK, Brazil, and Argentina, Showcase Cinemas is known for its commitment to comfort and quality, offering a diverse range of dining options and innovative in-theater services.

The Challenge: A Digital Refresh

As part of a major refresh initiative for all Showcase Cinemas in the US, the company sought to replace its aging display network. DEEL Media, a PPDS partner, was tasked with transforming the visual experience for movie-goers, establishing consistent communication across all locations, and creating new revenue opportunities.

The Solution: Philips Signage D-Line and Videowall X-Line

After careful consideration and site visits, DEEL Media selected and installed 549 Philips Signage D-Line 4K UHD digital displays (43”-75”) and 19 Philips Videowall X-Line (49”-55”) displays. These units were strategically placed in all Showcase Cinemas lobby areas and along corridors leading to each theater screen, replacing the previous disparate approach to displays with a unified and consistent solution. The flexibility and versatility of Philips X-Line and D-Line displays, coupled with their powerful 4K screens, ensured optimal performance in any lighting condition.

Connected Experiences: A Digital Enhancement

The implementation of Philips Signage D-Line and Videowall X-Line displays, supported by DEEL Media’s proprietary ‘Carbon™’ content management system, introduced a wave of digital content and information. Paper-based messaging was eliminated, and visitors now enjoy a constant feed of box office information, movie trailers, wayfinding, and extensive branding and marketing opportunities. The main food concession kiosks, featuring an array of connected Philips Signage D-Line displays, became the centerpiece with dynamic digital menu boards showcasing visuals, pricing, calories, and deals, leading to a 20 percent increase in food and beverage sales.

Success and Future Prospects

Despite a tight deadline, the project was completed on time, earning praise for overcoming challenges and exceeding ambitions. Bruce Wyrwitzke, Director of Sales NA at PPDS, highlighted the success of the project, emphasizing the positive impact of Philips digital signage solutions on visitor experiences and increased profits.

Vik Joshi, Assistant Vice President of Retail Technologies at Showcase Cinemas US, expressed satisfaction with the quality and capabilities of the solution, describing the transition as seamless. Jacob Volk, Executive Vice President of Client Services at DEEL Media, emphasized the standout choices of Philips displays and the ease of managing digital signage across all theaters.

Conclusion: A Seamless Transition to the Future

The Showcase Cinemas project stands as a testament to the transformative power of cutting-edge digital signage solutions. PPDS and DEEL Media, through their collaboration, have not only refreshed the visual landscape of Showcase Cinemas but have also created new revenue streams and enhanced the overall movie-going experience. The success of this project positions Philips digital signage as a leader in the industry, providing a template for other theaters looking to update and modernize their facilities.

VIOOH Shares Industry-First: 18% Lower Carbon Emissions Benchmark

0

London – VIOOH, a leading global digital out-of-home (DOOH) supply-side platform, is pleased to announce a significant milestone in sustainability. In collaboration with the Carbon Intelligence Platform, Cedara, a supporter of Ad Net Zero, VIOOH discloses its programmatic DOOH (prDOOH) carbon emissions data for 2022, indicating an 18% reduction below the programmatic open web benchmark.

Cedara’s comprehensive measurement identifies VIOOH’s impression intensity carbon emissions at 0.28 grams CO2e per ad impression in 2022, notably below the Cedara ad platform benchmark of 0.34, derived from programmatic open web vendor data. This accomplishment follows a thorough greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory assessment conducted by Cedara, covering VIOOH’s operations, including programmatic media activity, a significant contributor to Scope 3 emissions.

In comparison, a March 2023 KPMG study in France on Energy Performance reports DOOH’s energy consumption at 0.32 gCO2e, notably lower than the 0.55-0.66 gCO2e range for digital internet media per audience impression.

Jean-Christophe Conti, CEO at VIOOH, expresses enthusiasm about the achievement, stating, “At VIOOH, we are diligent about analyzing the environmental impact of VIOOH’s programmatic DOOH advertising activity. We are pleased to have achieved a lower carbon footprint than industry averages for the open web, highlighting the benefits of environmentally considerate prDOOH.”

Eric Shih, COO at Cedara, commends VIOOH’s commitment to sustainability and transparent accountability, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to contribute to a sustainable future.

VIOOH is committed to continuous carbon impact measurement, providing partners and clients with information to make informed sustainability decisions on media allocation. Further sustainability initiatives will be announced in the near future.

Scope3 Expands Carbon Measurement Capabilities to Include DOOH Advertising

0

New York – Scope3, a leading collaborative sustainability platform in media and advertising decarbonization, has announced a significant enhancement to its emissions measurement capabilities. The company has expanded its model to include Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) advertising, partnering with industry leaders such as Hivestack, JCDecaux ANZ, Go Media, Lumo, and VIOOH. This development marks a crucial step in understanding and mitigating the environmental impact of digital advertising globally.

With DOOH ad spending projected to rise from $17 billion in 2023 to nearly $24 billion by 2028, Scope3’s expansion is timely and critical. The refined emissions model incorporates advanced features tailored to the unique aspects of DOOH advertising, including different screen types and venues like taxi screens and billboards. A key innovation is the introduction of an impression multiplier, which accounts for the average number of people within proximity to a screen, recognizing DOOH as a one-to-many advertising format.

The model leverages granular, channel-specific data, including the energy grid mix of geographical locations, to provide precise emission measurements and identify significant reduction opportunities. Early findings from Scope3 challenge the assumption that smaller screens are always more sustainable, highlighting the complexity of the environmental impact.

Hivestack, a global DOOH ad tech company, played an essential role in developing Scope3’s emissions model, providing insights and expertise. Continuous support from Hivestack, JCDecaux ANZ, Go Media, Lumo, and VIOOH ensures the model’s ongoing refinement and adaptation. These industry leaders are pioneering efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of DOOH advertising through Scope3’s platform.

Brian O’Kelley, CEO and co-founder of Scope3, emphasized the collaborative nature of this achievement: “Mapping and modeling a complex and interconnected media ecosystem can’t be done alone. It took a community of collaborators with deep channel expertise months of building and testing to bring DOOH measurement to life.”

Andreas Soupliotis, founder and CEO at Hivestack, echoed this sentiment: “This initiative goes beyond a singular outcome; it’s about laying the foundation for a decarbonized ecosystem that will not only benefit advertisers, media owners, and data providers but will also pave the way for a more green future for DOOH advertising technology.”

Currently, Scope3’s DOOH emissions model is powered by data from 100,000 screens worldwide, with plans to expand further. The DOOH data is now accessible via Scope3’s API, and the dataset will be integrated into the Scope3 collaborative sustainability platform (CSP) in 2024.

About Scope3:

Scope3 is a Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to decarbonizing media and advertising. The company’s collaborative sustainability platform features a unique emissions model that provides precise measurements for the interconnected advertising ecosystem. With a global team across North America, Europe, and APAC, Scope3 aims to address the climate crisis by enabling stakeholders in the advertising ecosystem to visualize, measure, and reduce their carbon emissions. Key administrative functions, including user management, role-based access, device monitoring, device management, and emergency alerts, are centralized at the platform level. This streamlines IT operations, enabling efficient management in one location, while content management by users occurs through various applications.

Userful and Sony have already showcased their integrated solutions during OOH in New York earlier this fall and are set to demonstrate it again in San Diego during the AV Tech Expo – a Sony roadshow event on February 5, 2024.

In a significant acknowledgment of creativity and sustainability, PPDS, the global provider of Philips professional displays, is pleased to announce the winners of the first-ever ‘MUSE Digital Art Award.’ The winners were revealed during the world’s premier ‘zero-power’ digital art exhibition held in Milan, where Philips Tableaux ePaper displays showcased the brilliance of artists committed to making a difference.

The distinguished London-based art collective C-LAB, led by co-founder Laura Cinti, and Italian student Giacomo Erba, studying at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, emerged victorious from a pool of over 200 entries representing 44 countries across the globe.

Connecting Creativity with Sustainability

The MUSE Digital Art Award, initiated by PPDS in August, marked a unique cultural initiative uniting the world’s creative minds with cutting-edge sustainable display technology. In collaboration with contemporary art curator Julia Rajacic and supported by Italy’s National Museum of Digital Art (MNDA), the competition aimed to visually articulate the challenges posed by the global ecological and climate crisis.

Global Participation and Rigorous Selection Process

The response exceeded expectations, with artists from diverse backgrounds and 20 finalists chosen by an esteemed panel of judges, including Ilaria Bonacossa, Domenico Quaranta, and Gabriela Galati. The final works were displayed on individual Philips Tableaux displays in Milan’s Fabbrica del Vapore, creating the world’s first ‘zero-power’ digital art exhibition from November 23 to December 12, 2023.

Sustainability at the Forefront

MUSE prioritized sustainability, selecting the 25″ Philips Tableaux ePaper display for its ability to deliver vibrant images 24/7 without consuming electricity. The entire event adhered to carbon neutrality guidelines, with a comprehensive carbon footprint report produced and offset by local Italian sustainability company Ustainable.

Recognizing Excellence

At the awards ceremony on November 23, Laura Cinti of C-LAB received the top honor for her project ‘Living Dead — On the Trail of a Female,’ emphasizing the importance of conserving endangered plant species. Giacomo Erba, with his work ‘Gneiss/3 ore/°1200°,’ secured the MUSE Student Award for his innovative approach to landscape photography, earning special mention.

Inspiring Change and Leading the Way

Ron Cottaar, Director of Global Marketing at PPDS, expressed pride in contributing to energy-conscious display solutions and inspiring positive change. Stefan van Sabben, Global CSR and Sustainability Manager, emphasized the urgency of addressing global ecological and climate challenges, highlighting initiatives like MUSE as essential for transformative thinking.

Luca Guariniello, Marketing Manager Italy at PPDS, thanked participants for their outstanding contributions, making MUSE a resounding success.

In the quest for a sustainable future, PPDS, through MUSE, not only showcases innovative digital art but also paves the way for a more conscious and interconnected world.
