Ayuda announces that its free Splash digital signage player now runs on Google Android and Apple iOS devices, including Google Tablets, Google Phones, Apple iPads, iPhones, and iPods
At Screen Media Expo 2011 today, Ayuda Media Systems (“Ayuda”) announced that, in addition to its existing Windows and Linux support, the free Splash Digital Signage Player now also supports devices running Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS operating systems. The Splash™ Digital Signage Player is available for immediate download for free from both the Google Android Marketplace, and the Apple App Store.
With the addition of Android and iOS, the free Splash™ Digital Signage Player now supports all major desktop and tablet operating systems. This opens up a plethora of possibilities in the digital signage market space as hardware vendors and digital signage vendors continue their quest for ever-cheaper, all-in-one solutions for next-generation digital signage networks.
“With new Android-powered devices being announced every week, who knows what form factors will be available tomorrow,” contemplated Andreas Soupliotis, President & CEO of Ayuda. “Imagine a future where LED TVs will be running Android software, or where Apple releases a 15-inch iPad. Current tablets, including the various Android-powered tablets, and Apple’s iPads, already incorporate many of the technologies that network operators look for in a robust, efficient, hardware media player. With built-in wireless communication, solid-state drives, touch interactivity, and sophisticated heat management – not to mention gorgeous screens – the current generation of Google and iOS-powered tablets are well positioned to form the backbone of next-generation digital signage networks.
“Why would a network operator want to source, pay for, assemble, and maintain separate screens, PCs, network cards, and other components, when they could simply hang an Android-powered device on the wall?” asked Soupliotis. “Granted, the current available sizes would not work for all network operators, but Ayuda sees a future where Android-powered devices will increase in screen size. Our vision is to power any device on any platform.”
A number of companies are marketing tablet wall-mounts and stands for retail and corporate use, legitimizing the possibility of using tablets in digital signage networks. Several leading LCD manufacturers are also already toying with the idea of powering their screens with Google’s Android operating system, further lending credibility to Soupliotis’ vision. According to Soupliotis, the Splash™ Digital Signage Player will be well-positioned when Android-powered TVs hit the market. Network operators will have an easy, integrated platform on which to base their networks.
“As far as we know, Ayuda is the only software player developer to build on top of the MONO platform (a platform-invariant version of the Microsoft .Net Framework),” explains Richard Markiewicz, Ayuda’s Lead Architect on the Splash Digital Signage Player. “That technology decision has proven to have far-reaching benefits, as we were able to achieve Android and iOS support with only a few additional lines of code.”
