When Towson University opens their doors to Tiger Arena, those in attendance will notice many state-of-the-art features throughout the arena, including an integrated light emitting diode (LED) video and scoring system provided by Daktronics of Brookings, S.D. The entire system will include a centerhung display with several video elements and a LED ribbon display that circles the inside of the arena.
“As we were designing our new state-of-the-art arena here at Towson, we wanted to augment this facility with the latest technology and bring our fans and partners a great in-game experience,” said Towson Director of Athletics Mike Waddell. “Daktronics is a worldwide leader in this domain with boards across the nation and the world, and their capabilities will not leave anyone wanting more. This building will be a gem in the Mid-Atlantic.”
The highlight of the new centerhung display will be four video displays, each measuring 9 feet tall by more than 15 feet wide and utilizing Daktronics 10 millimeter line spacing. Located below each video display will be a LED message display that measures 3 feet tall by more than 14 feet wide and utilizes the same 10 millimeter technology. All of these displays can operate independently to show one large image or be divided into multiple zones to show a variety of statistical information, graphics, animation, and live and recorded video.
Located above the video displays, on top of the centerhung, will be a ring display with a circumference of more than 96 feet. Another ring display will be located below the video and message display at the bottom of the centerhung and will measure 53 feet around. These will provide a wide range of information and graphics to keep fans engaged with crowd prompts, in-game statistics and out-of-town scores while also highlighting game sponsors.
Also included in the installation will be a LED ribbon display mounted to the fascia that circles the inside of the entire arena. The ribbon will measure 3 feet high and spans almost 700 feet around the court. This 360-degree display will add more opportunities for game sponsors and graphics to get the crowd involved with the action on the court.
Five digital courtside scorer’s tables will also be featured at the new arena from Daktronics. These displays will measure 3 feet high by more than 9 feet in length and can be connected in any configuration. The scorer’s tables are integrated with the centerhung and ribbon displays to show the same image or showcase completely different information for fans.
Construction on the approximately 5,200-seat arena began in May 2011. When complete, the facility will be the new home to the basketball, volleyball and gymnastics programs. The official opening of the facility is scheduled to be in August 2013.
