Sanya Phoenix Island Development in China has partnered with Daktronics Inc. (NASDAQ: DAKT) of Brookings, South Dakota, USA, to install state-of-the-art LED stick video elements across the new Phoenix Island. The multi-million dollar project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010, with the overall construction of Phoenix Island expected to be finalized by 2014. This order was recorded during Daktronics’ fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2010.

Extensive LED Installation

Approximately 33,000 linear meters (108,000 feet) of Daktronics’ ProPixel® LED stick elements will be integrated into the exterior design of the island’s buildings. Each building’s curtain-wall has been specifically designed to house these LED elements, ensuring a sleek and continuous appearance without visible add-on features.

“Early involvement in the design process allowed us to bring our experience in this type of application to the customer’s project team,” said Jon Minor, Daktronics (Shanghai) Sales Director. “Our willingness to support the customer’s design needs combined with an unparalleled product positioned Daktronics as the company of choice for the owner in his effort to create a globally recognized luxury facility.”

Demonstration and Product Innovation

To demonstrate the capabilities of their product, Daktronics arranged a large-scale installation covering over 360 square meters (3,875 square feet) on one of Phoenix Island’s buildings. This demonstration showcased Daktronics’ ability to meet the development company’s requirements. The design includes two different types of LED sticks to accommodate the curved surfaces of the buildings.

Daktronics’ ProPixel® LED elements allow for the creation of freeform, video-capable architectural elements without the limitations of traditional square LED modules. This technology supports true 100% digital, 15-bit video processing and can display over 1 billion colors. ProPixel® technology also offers full-color, full-motion capability, providing impressive visual impact while consuming less power and requiring less maintenance than traditional lighting methods.

Creative Content and Keyframe® Involvement

The Daktronics Keyframe® creative group played a crucial role in the project by delivering the creative vision and technical expertise needed to maximize the impact of the display systems. Keyframe® is responsible for developing all creative content for the initial project opening ceremony and establishing a content foundation for ongoing display use.
