Darlington Holiday Warehouse Sees 7% Increase in Traffic with Watchfire LED Sign

0

Fort Wayne, IN – This holiday season, households in Fort Wayne, Indiana, will hang over 250,000 Christmas stockings, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. For Brian Ellis, owner of Darlington Holiday Warehouse, these stockings represent not just holiday cheer, but a significant business opportunity. Ellis has successfully boosted foot traffic to his store by nearly 7% this year, thanks to a strategic investment in a digital sign from Watchfire Signs of Danville, Illinois.

Darlington Holiday Warehouse, a 30,000-square-foot Christmas emporium, offers thousands of holiday gifts, with 90% priced at just $1.59. Despite its appealing price points and an aggressive advertising strategy involving print, radio, and social media, the store faced a major challenge: its location on a high-traffic road, but outside of typical retail zones.

“Although we’re on a high-traffic road, we’re not in a typical retail area,” Ellis explained. “We had to find a way to let passing drivers know we are here.”

To address this challenge, Ellis reached out to Creative Sign Resources a year ago. Matt Schlau, the owner of Creative Sign Resources, understood the need for a solution that was both “big and bold.” Schlau recommended a Watchfire LED sign, known for its quality and customer service, as the perfect tool to enhance Darlington Holiday Warehouse’s visibility.

The LED sign allowed Darlington Holiday Warehouse to dynamically adjust its promotions to reflect the constantly changing inventory, which can include 50 to 100 new items each week. The ability to tailor advertising to daily stock levels has been a game-changer for Ellis. “In the morning we have a meeting and ask: What are we heavy on? What new deals can we offer? And that’s what we’ll promote on the sign,” Ellis said.

The sign’s impact extends beyond just sales. Using Watchfire’s Ignite® Graphics Software, Ellis and his marketing team have created humorous and off-beat messages that capture the fun and festive spirit of the holiday season. Even when the store is closed for most of the year, the sign keeps customers engaged with countdowns and messages that build anticipation for the store’s seasonal reopening.

The results speak for themselves. For a business that operates only 10 weeks out of the year, a 6-7% increase in traffic is significant. “When you sell millions of products, a bump of 6 to 7 percent is significant,” Ellis noted. “When we invested in something this significant, we wanted a clear return. We couldn’t be happier.”

Shaw Communications Elevates Retail Experience with Christie MicroTiles Digital Display Technology

0

Shaw Communications has introduced an immersive and visually stunning in-store experience with the installation of Christie® MicroTiles® digital displays. These dynamic “waterfall” formations, designed to captivate and engage customers, are now featured in four retail locations across Alberta and British Columbia, with additional installations planned.

First unveiled in May at the Sunridge Mall in Calgary, the 4×6 MicroTiles arrays serve as an innovative centerpiece in Shaw stores. The digital displays are aimed at drawing in foot traffic while educating customers on Shaw’s offerings, including cable television, internet, and phone services.

“We wanted to make the stores exciting enough so the customer would look at the displays and see a reason to walk into the store,” said James Ferguson, Shaw’s National Director of Retail. “Christie MicroTiles were the answer.”

A Unique Visual Experience with Christie MicroTiles

Combining LED technology with proven DLP® imaging, Christie MicroTiles are renowned for their vibrant, high-quality visuals, making them ideal for environments with high ambient light, such as retail stores. Measuring 16 inches wide by 12 inches tall and less than a foot deep, the tiles are versatile and modular, allowing for creative installations in various formats, such as the waterfall design Shaw has implemented.

Rather than a standard flat display, Shaw’s stores feature a visually dynamic setup where the tiles are staggered with intentional gaps, creating a “waterfall” effect. Individual pieces of content—ranging from media and product information to promotions—cascade across the display, capturing the attention of both shoppers and passersby. This unique setup was achieved using special brackets designed by RP Visuals and content created by Breakhouse, ensuring an immersive and engaging experience.

“We wanted to give our video team a cool ‘sandbox’ to play in that provided content versatility and didn’t limit their imagination,” Ferguson explained. “Christie MicroTiles did just that.”

Driving Engagement and Revenue Opportunities

The waterfall effect of the MicroTiles encourages customers to look up—an uncommon behavior in retail environments. According to Ferguson, this shift in attention not only enhances the customer experience but also boosts the value of Shaw’s upper shelf space, opening up new revenue opportunities.

“The popularity of Christie MicroTiles continues to grow worldwide, and here in Canada, the possibilities are almost endless,” said Dave Muscat, Christie’s Senior Director of Sales, Canada. “We are thrilled that Shaw’s clients are engaging with these displays, which further reinforces the value of creative visual solutions in retail.”

A Growing Trend in Digital Retail Displays

With the success of the first few installations, Shaw Communications plans to expand the use of Christie MicroTiles to additional stores. The technology has proven to be a powerful tool in driving customer engagement and differentiating Shaw from other retail environments.
