APN Outdoor has unveiled one of Australia’s largest digital signs, a 121-foot-wide and 11-foot-high (37 meters by 3.5 meters) LED display located across from the bustling Flinders Street Station in Melbourne.
Mounted atop the historic Young & Jackson Hotel, this cutting-edge outdoor advertising display was developed in collaboration with technology partners Techmedia and Barco, marking a milestone for APN Outdoor in simplifying content management for both its team and advertisers.
The project took over two years of planning and approvals, with APN Outdoor aiming to create an easy-to-use platform for advertisers to design and manage their campaigns. Utilizing Scala software, advertisers are provided with templates to customize their content, which can be scheduled to run within 24 hours. The ads, displayed for 7.5 seconds each, rotate through an eight-ad loop every 60 seconds, delivering dynamic, high-impact visibility.
The 147 Barco SLite 10XP FX LED tiles used in the display ensure optimal performance, being both dustproof and waterproof to handle Melbourne’s varied weather conditions. APN Outdoor’s General Manager of Marketing, Paul McBeth, highlighted the importance of reliability and scalability in selecting Techmedia and Barco for the project, noting their proven international experience with large-scale signage.
Techmedia’s Managing Director, Norman Cantrell, praised the flexibility of Scala software in meeting APN Outdoor’s requirements. Staff training was completed in just a few days, and the Barco team easily mastered the screen management system.
Since its launch, the digital sign has attracted high-profile advertisers like Foxtel, Coca-Cola, Sony, and Audi, with many brands booking space through the end of 2009. APN Outdoor plans to further explore digital signage opportunities across Australia’s out-of-home advertising industry, signaling continued growth in the sector.
