Sydney, Australia — The BBC Earth Experience, recently launched at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, is redefining immersive exhibitions with a groundbreaking display of natural world exploration and cutting-edge technology. This multimedia attraction, narrated by the acclaimed Sir David Attenborough, has been created through a collaboration between TDC (Technology and Development Company), HIVE, Moon Eye Productions, Live Nation, BBC Studios, and Tinker Imagineers.

The exhibit’s unique draw comes from its advanced technology, enabled by TDC’s innovative use of HIVE’s BeeBlade media servers. Unlike conventional setups, this exhibition integrates HIVE’s players directly within 70 Panasonic projectors, resulting in an efficient, high-quality display with minimal physical footprint. Of these, 55 projectors are dedicated to a central 360-degree immersive panorama that exceeds 127 million pixels, creating a visual experience that is both breathtaking and environmentally mindful.

Michael Hassett, TDC’s Managing Director, highlights the practical and environmental benefits of this integration. “By embedding the HIVE players directly in the projectors, we’re able to cut down on the need for a centralized control room and bulky cable setups, saving both space and energy,” said Hassett in a behind-the-scenes video on the project. This technological advancement not only maximizes viewing quality but also supports TDC’s commitment to eco-friendly innovation, using HIVE’s low-energy media server solutions.

Known for their high-profile work on projects at the Australian Museum and the Australian National Maritime Museum, as well as the soon-to-open Dream Circus at Sydney’s Luna Park, TDC continues to push the boundaries of immersive technology with the Melbourne BBC Earth Experience.

“The Melbourne exhibit is a glimpse into the future of digital storytelling—one that is greener and more impactful,” adds Hassett, underscoring the importance of sustainability in TDC’s future projects.
