Michigan State University (MSU) has recently transformed the Jack Breslin Student Events Center into a state-of-the-art sports and events venue, thanks to a significant upgrade in video technology. The Breslin Center, a multipurpose arena seating over 16,000, is the proud home of MSU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the Spartans’ volleyball program. This iconic facility also hosts a variety of events including commencement ceremonies, concerts, and other live entertainment.
This technological leap was achieved in partnership with SNA Displays, a leader in LED video display manufacturing. The collaboration was facilitated by Anthony James Partners (AJP), serving as the owner’s representative and technology consultant. AJP provided comprehensive design, procurement, and construction administration services.
The centerpiece of this upgrade is a remarkable centerhung video display system. The new installation features four curved 4 mm BOLD Interiorâ„¢ LED screens, creating a seamless 360-degree digital canvas. The combined display measures an impressive 14 feet in height and 104 feet in length, offering more than 8.5 million pixels for an unmatched visual experience.
Additionally, the centerhung is enhanced with cladding and LED strip lighting by Phoenix Signs, as well as a striking backlit Spartans logo, adding to the venue’s dynamic ambiance.
A significant addition to the Breslin Center is the 360-degree LED ribbon board. This 10 mm ribbon display, approximately four feet tall, encircles the arena’s bowl, spanning over 725 linear feet. It significantly enhances the spectator experience, delivering vivid imagery and information.
Moreover, the arena’s digital signage package now includes a cutting-edge courtside table equipped with a 3.9 mm BOLDâ„¢ Interior LED video display.
Michael Rowe, CEO of AJP, praised the new installation, highlighting the synergy between the high-definition LED replay screens, ribbon boards, and the electrifying atmosphere of the Breslin Center. He acknowledged SNA Displays’ role in bringing the custom scoreboard design to life and emphasized the longstanding relationship with Michigan State Athletics.
Jason Helton, Executive Vice President for SNA Displays, expressed pride in collaborating with a prestigious Big Ten program like MSU and the AJP team. He emphasized that the centerhung represents a new standard for large, multipurpose arenas.
The display system is powered by a sophisticated video management tool, Ross Video’s XPression Tessera, supported by a robust hardware platform including a Carbonite Ultra power switcher and an Ultrix router.
Structural and cladding fabrication services were provided by Phoenix Signs, which also designed the centerhung’s prominent Spartans logo feature. Bumgarner Construction played a vital role in the installation process.
