The technique exploits simple physics and can be used to charge a range of electronic devices.

Eric Giler, chief executive of US firm Witricity, showed mobile phones and televisions charging wirelessly at the TED Global conference in Oxford.

Eastern Illinois University Upgrades O’Brien Field with Daktronics LED and Sound System

Starting this fall, the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University will enjoy an enhanced game-day experience at O’Brien Field thanks to a new integrated scoring, video, and sound system from Daktronics (Nasdaq: DAKT). The company, based in Brookings, South Dakota, will design, manufacture, and install the new system this summer on the EIU campus in Charleston, Illinois.

Advanced LED Video Display and Scoreboard

The centerpiece of the new system is a Daktronics HD-16 LED video display, measuring approximately 13 feet high and 23 feet wide. Utilizing Daktronics’ latest HD-X technology, this display will be mounted atop a new LED scoreboard with programmable team name message centers. The complete setup will measure 28 feet high by 45 feet wide, significantly enhancing the viewing experience at O’Brien Field, one of the top football facilities in the Ohio Valley Conference.

“I am excited for this new video board to be installed, as it will bring a whole new dimension to events at O’Brien Field,” said Barbara Burke, EIU Athletic Director. “This is something that will benefit our intercollegiate athletic programs for years to come.”

Enhanced Audio System and Timing Displays

In addition to the video display, EIU will receive a Daktronics Sportsound® 1500HD audio system, which features a 20-foot wide speaker cabinet designed to deliver clear and powerful game announcements to every seat in the stadium. The installation also includes LED timing displays to track delay of game and time of day information.

“This new video board and sound system just shows another way that Athletic Director Barbara Burke and the EIU administration are working to upgrade our programs,” said EIU Head Football Coach Bob Spoo. “This will put us in elite company among Ohio Valley Conference schools and help draw people into the stands for our home football games.”

Benefits for Multiple Sports

The new system will also benefit EIU’s track and field events. “This scoreboard will be a great addition to our home Eastern Illinois track meets as well as the IHSA State meet,” said EIU Director of Track and Field Tom Akers. “We currently have a video display board for our home indoor meets and it has a great impact when you can post immediate results.”

Daktronics Partnership

“Daktronics is excited to partner with Eastern Illinois University and bring the latest in LED and audio technology to O’Brien Field,” said Matt Warnke, Daktronics Sales. “Eastern Illinois University will be the first college in both the state of Illinois and the Ohio Valley Conference to install our HD-X product.
