Houston, Texas – The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) has partnered with GMV to revolutionize the public transport experience in Houston, Texas. A new contract valued at over $26 million has been signed, marking one of the largest investments in real-time signage by a US transit agency.
Under this groundbreaking agreement, GMV will deploy a cloud-hosted content management system and extend its installation, maintenance, and support services for up to 3,000 digital signs at key transit centers, rail platforms, bus stops, as well as current and planned light rail platforms and park & ride facilities. This transformative project is part of METRONext, a voter-approved investment initiative aimed at enhancing Houston’s public transportation system.
Since 2019, METRO has successfully deployed over 200 real-time digital signs along the METRORapid Silver Line, leveraging a combination of multimedia video screens and LED scrolling message signs to provide passengers with timely information. These signs offer live bus departure times, transit service alerts, and public service announcements, ensuring that commuters can complete their journeys with confidence. GMV’s advanced software allows Metro staff to seamlessly manage and update the signs in real-time, enabling them to post messages individually or in groups, publish multimedia content, and remotely monitor the displays from their office.
“We are excited and proud to collaborate with Houston Metro to expand their digital signage project,” stated Ian Sephton, CEO of GMV’s US transportation division. “This initiative demonstrates the effectiveness of GMV’s technology in enhancing the passenger experience for transit agencies of all sizes.”
In support of this visionary project, GMV has established an office in Houston to facilitate its transit business expansion across the United States. The growing Houston facility is home to an increasing number of technical and administrative employees, contributing significantly to the local economy as an employer.
A ribbon-cutting event celebrating the successful installation of passenger information signs took place in December 2022, symbolizing the commencement of this ambitious venture. Over the next seven years, GMV’s digital signage project will continue to evolve, elevating the public transport experience for millions of commuters in Houston.
