NewSight Japan Ltd. has developed an LCD panel with the ability to convert two-dimensional still images into pictures suitable for glasses-free 3-D viewing.
Starting in August, the company will begin marketing digital picture frames and digital signage using the new panel.
The panel has a USB port for transfer of pictures captured with a regular digital camera. Internally, the device converts each single image into a set of five images with slightly different viewing angles, and shows them on a panel covered by a special lens that directs different images to each eye. The result is a 3-D effect without the need for special glasses.
A digital picture frame with 2 gigabytes of memory will be released in mid-August at a price of 29,800 yen. NewSight expects to ship 10,000 units within the year.
The company also will release a digital signage product at that time priced around 50,000 yen. This product will have built-in Wi-Fi support for easy changing of images on display.
