Tokyo, Japan – Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ), a leading provider of Internet access and network solutions in Japan, announced the upcoming launch of its innovative Disaster Information Linked Content Distribution Solution, targeted for a summer 2012 release. This advanced system aims to deliver critical emergency alerts and disaster-related information via digital signage integrated into vending machines, addressing a vital need for real-time communication during emergencies.

Key Features and Capabilities:

  1. Comprehensive Content Management System (CMS): The solution includes a CMS for easy addition and management of content, facilitating timely updates. This allows for the swift distribution of emergency earthquake and tsunami alerts, leveraging IIJ’s Earthquake Alert Service.
  2. Priority Emergency Alerts: During disasters, urgent information such as earthquake and tsunami warnings will be prioritized, ensuring that crucial updates reach the public without delay.
  3. Robust Infrastructure: The solution provides a resilient cloud environment and a disaster-resistant network infrastructure. This includes secure VPN connections between digital signage systems and the central information distribution network, ensuring continuous operation during emergencies.
  4. Flexible Connectivity Options: Depending on the installation environment, the system supports both mobile and fixed-line connections, making it versatile and adaptable to various locations.

Application and Benefits:

The Disaster Information Linked Content Distribution Solution is particularly designed for use by municipal governments. It offers a cost-effective alternative to setting up proprietary systems by providing a cloud-based service for information distribution. Public digital signage, such as those found in public buildings, can utilize this service to broadcast both routine information and emergency alerts, without the need for extensive local infrastructure.

This innovative use of vending machines with digital signage capabilities transforms them into dynamic information hubs. Under normal circumstances, these machines can display general content, while in times of disaster, they serve as critical points for disseminating emergency information.

Deployment and Demonstration:

IIJ will collaborate with DyDo DRINCO, INC. to implement this solution in the company’s Disaster Support Vending Machines. A live demonstration of the system will take place at the Wireless Japan 2012 tradeshow at Tokyo Big Sight from May 30, 2012, where attendees can experience the capabilities of these enhanced vending machines at the IIJ booth.
